Dear Bee Hive,

Happy Fall! With so much going on in our lives, country, and world it is a gift to be able to share with you all in this way. I hope you all are finding peace in your hearts and bodies as we all attempt to artfully navigate these new and challenging scenarios that result from living in the time of COVID-19. We are right there with you! There are many things we don’t have control over right now, but we can control what goes in and on our bodies and the activities we participate in to support our well being. Because this is our first Newsletter in a few months we have packed this edition with some of our favorite fall recipes, a link to a grounding yoga class taught by ME, and some awesome fall PROMOS on our favorite warming Bee Veda products.

Sending Love, Hope, and Warmth,

Allie

Stewed Apples with Dates

  • 2 apples, cored and chopped

  • 4 dates, pitted and halved

  • 2 cups water

  • 1 tbsp maple syrup

  • 1 tbsp grated fresh ginger (optional)

  • 1 tsp everyday sweet spice mix (2 tbsp cinnamon powder, 2 tbsp ginger powder, 1 tbsp cardamom powder)

In a small saucepan, combine all ingredients. Bring to a boil over high heat then simmer for 5min. Remove from heat and blend with an immersion blender for a few seconds, or blend ⅓ of the mixture in a standing blender then combine with the remaining chunky fruit. You may substitute raisins or prunes for the dates for a lighter meal.

Yam Bomb

  • 2 medium-size yams

  • 2 tsp ghee, maple syrup, and/or almond butter

  • Cinnamon to taste

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Poke yams with a fork, place on a baking sheet, and bake until they’re cooked through. Peel back the skin and press the sides of the yams to create a bowl. Fill the bowl with ghee mixture and sprinkle with cinnamon. If you prefer a savory flavor add whipped tahini sauce.

Whipped Tahini Sauce

  • ½ cup tahini

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • Juice of ½ lemon

  • ½ tsp salt

In a bowl large enough to whisk all ingredients, add tahini first then combine the additional ingredients and whisk until smooth. If you desire a thinner (pourable) consistency, add 2 tbsp of water at a time and continue to whisk until the desired consistency is achieved.

Preparing for Winter

This recipe is a fantastic immune booster as well as a winter cold remedy. Fire Cider takes a few weeks to marinade so be sure to make a batch a few weeks prior to adding it into your winter wellness routine! This should NOT be a substitute for seeking medical treatment for illness. If you are sick, please see your doctor to seek the best course of action. This can however, be a great tool to ward off pesky colds and sniffles during the cold months.

Fire Cider

  • 1 large horseradish root scrubbed very well, abt 7 inches long

  • 1 large ginger root abt 7 inches long

  • 1 large onion root and stem end removed and peeled

  • 1 large orange do NOT peel. Use the whole fruit.

  • 1 lemon do NOT peel. Use the whole fruit.

  • 16 cloves of garlic peeled

  • 2-4 habanero peppers stems removed

  • 1 tbsp ground turmeric

  • raw apple cider vinegar

  • raw honey

Grate the horseradish and ginger roots. Roughly chop the onions, orange, lemon, garlic, and habanero peppers. Stuff them into a half-gallon glass jar with a tight fitting lid or divide evenly between two quart sized canning jars. Sprinkle the turmeric in on top (dividing evenly between the two jars if using quart jars). Pour the raw apple cider vinegar in over the contents, allowing it to settle in through the crevices and adding more so that the contents are submerged. Lay a piece of parchment paper over the rim of the jar, then screw the lid tightly in place. Let the mixture sit in a dark, cool place, allowing it to marry and infuse for 4 weeks, shaking once daily.

After 4 weeks, pour the contents into a muslin or cheesecloth lined colander positioned over a stable pot. Let it drain for 30 minutes, then gather the corners of the cloth, twisting and squeezing until you cannot release any more liquid. When it's fully strained, add honey to the liquid to taste and pour into a sterilized wine bottle or canning jar. Store in a cool, dark place for up to a year, shaking well before using.
